Your Fear Response
The Fight Response
"You're not working hard. You're white-knuckling."
You don't look scared. You look driven. When fear shows up, you grip tighter. More effort, more hours. You outwork the anxiety because slowing down means sitting with it.
Your work ethic is fine. The issue is that effort becomes the answer to everything, even when effort isn't the actual problem. You over-prepare for the meeting. You over-control the project. You squeeze harder when things get turbulent, and that makes the turbulence worse.
Fighter pilots call this PIO: pilot-induced oscillation. The plane starts shaking, and the pilot grips the stick harder, which makes the shaking worse. The actual fix is loosening your grip.
